Write-In Schedule for March
Plus a little contemplation on awards season
“Some writers, simply write, as they feel they are driven to do, by outer/inner inspirations. If, after the work is written and, hopefully, published, others respond—that is the Champagne. But we, or some of us, don’t write for the Champagne.” ― Tanith Lee, “InterGalactic Interview With Tanith Lee” by Darrell Schweitzer
It’s awards season. And (let’s be honest) who doesn’t love the idea of having their work celebrated? Who doesn’t want validation for the countless hours of isolation and the sacrifices given up in the name of art? (Some people appear to be able to do it all, but balance has never been my strong suit.)
Last year, I saw two anthologies released: Fractured Reveries: A Storied Imaginarium Salon and Storyteller: A Tanith Lee Tribute Anthology. Both of them are important to me, so it was wonderful to see them receiving recognition. Stories are already being singled out from Fractured Reveries, including Nike Sulway’s “Sparrow & Butler,” which was a finalist for the 2025 Aurealis Awards in the category of Best Fantasy Short Story, and Wailana Kalama’s “The Lazarus Ruins,” which was included in 2025’s BRAVE NEW WEIRD: The Best New Weird Horror Vol. 4.
Storyteller: A Tanith Lee Tribute Anthology has also been in the news. This gorgeous anthology, edited by Julie C. Day with the help of myself and Craig Laurance Gidney, has landed on the 2025 Locus Recommended Reading List. Voting for the Locus Awards is open through April 1, and you can get your link to vote HERE.
To my delight, Storyteller has also made the 2025 Bram Stoker Awards® Final Ballot. Tanith Lee received numerous nominations and awards for her work, but the Bram Stoker was never one of them. I wonder if this might be attributed to the genre-defying nature of her work, or possibly simply a sign of the times. (If you are interested, I looked at the marginalization of women in horror in my Bram Stoker nominated essay “Words Wielded by Women,” published in Apex Magazine.) In 2014, only a year before she passed away, Tanith Lee was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Horror Writers Association. I am grateful that the acknowledgment of Tanith’s influence in horror and dark fantasy is represented in the HWA nomination of Storyteller. It is a mixed-genre collection, but who knows, we might even win it.
(NOTE: the voting window for the Bram Stoker Awards closes at midnight on May 15. All Active and Lifetime members of the HWA can access a free digital copy of Storyteller through the links in the ballot mailer.)
“Genre categories are irrelevant. I dislike them, but I do not have the casting vote.” —Tanith Lee
In March, we will be meeting at our regularly scheduled times on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (with the exception of Saturday, March 28th). Since I’ve been down the last few days will an illness, I’ve added a couple of Monday meetings to the mix to round things out. I hope you’ll join our writing circle and share the progress on your own projects with us. We’re here to cheer you on. —Carina
