Write-In Schedule for August
Hosted by guest moderator Delaina Miller
“In writing, you must kill all your darlings.” — William Faulkner
It’s that time, my friends. (Actually, it’s been that time for a few years now.) And so, I’m taking the month of August to tackle the final draft of the novel I wrote during COVID, the same novel I threw away and then rewrote from scratch two years ago. There have been plenty of excuses, projects I’m happy to have been a part of, but it’s time to step away from the anthologies and poetry to finish this behemoth that has taken on a life of its own, taunting me from where I’ve tucked it away at the far corner of my desk.
It’s not my first. Over the years, I’ve made attempts at a few other novel-length projects, all of which I’ve thrown away, files deleted forever in favor of a blank page. This one is special, or maybe I’ve just grown fond of it. Or maybe I refuse to give up. Whatever the reason, it has escaped the fate of the recycling bin, and now I’m determined to be done with it by my birthday on August 31. After all, I’ve written the damn thing twice, and it’s only four hundred pages. I just need to knuckle down, or so I keep telling myself.
In preparation, I’ve been clearing off my desk and tying up loose ends. If there are distractions, I will inevitably veer off course. And that brings me to the write-ins. My friend and fellow writer Delaina Miller offered to host the write-ins for the month, which will free up the space for me to focus on my own work. I’m incredibly grateful for this amazing gift.
In August, you are encouraged to bring anything you would like to work on. But, if you are looking for a little extra inspiration, Delaina will also be offering a variety of prompts geared towards igniting your creative spark. There will be music on Mondays, art on Tuesdays, and on Saturdays, an oracle card will offer spirited guidance. I’m hoping to attend as a participant, and I’m excited to join in the fun!
Delaina J. Miller is a writer and a poet focusing on the human experience through the lens of caregiving and music. She is also a publisher, a Reiki Master, and a sound therapist. Her “Soundology” practice centers on the rhythm of the soul as an energy health modality, something that is reflected in her poetic work. Her poetry has been published in her debut The Unique and Sundry as well as in the collaborative collections Paper Birds and She Too: Four Voices in (Almost) Harmony.
